Not available

Large oil-on-canvas panel depicting a world map, painted by Umberto Noni in 1936 for the President’s Hall of the Tripcovich shipping company, located in the historic Palazzo del Tergesteo in Trieste; Italy. It is a reworking of an earlier composition created by the artist in 1928 for the Italian ocean liner Conte Grande.

The lands are represented with a serie of references to landscape elements, inhabitants and famous architectural landmarks characteristic of the various regions of the world.

The oceans are individuated by elegant calligraphic inscriptions from which radiate the routes of the earliest and most significant Western navigators and explorers. A detailed legend accompanies the map, listing the dates and names of the principal historical voyages of global exploration represented on the panel.

The corners of the composition are embellished with allegorical personifications of the winds, compass quadrants, ornamental cartouches, a compass rose, and a geographical grid, together with Latin inscriptions celebrating the theme of navigation.

Europe is personified as a warlike Phoenician princess reclining upon a bull.

The historic photograph of the room in which the panel was originally installed come from “Il Tergesteo. Biografia di un palazzo” and “Tripcovich. Raccolta di memorie di una famiglia e di un’azienda”.

The panel measures 370 cm in width and 240 cm in height.
